In a bid to reduce plastic waste and promote environmental sustainability, the Lagos State Government has announced a ban on single-use plastics and sachet water, effective January 2025.
Ban Details
– Products affected: Single-use plastics, sachet water, pet bottles, and similar items
– Implementation date: January 2025
– Previous ban: Styrofoam was banned in January 2024
Government’s Objective
According to Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the ban aims to establish policy guidelines for plastic utility and ensure sustainable waste management.
Stakeholders’ Concerns
The Association for Table Water Producers of Nigeria (ATWAP) has appealed to the government to:
1. Implement the ban in phases
2. Engage with stakeholders
3. Consider the impact on over 2,000 members and 10,000 workers in Lagos
ATWAP’s Reaction
“We urge the government to implement the ban gradually, allowing our members time to adapt and comply,” said Mosaku Ololade, ATWAP Chairperson.
