Low Rice Production in Nigeria Raises Concerns Amid Rising Demand

The Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN) has expressed concerns over low production output in the sector, attributing it to inconsistencies among farmers. Despite support from the Lagos State Government, local rice production falls short of meeting growing demand.

RIFAN Lagos State Chairman, Mr. Raphael Hunsa, noted that rice production in Lagos has been consistent, but the 3,800 tonnes produced last year is insufficient to meet market demand. Hunsa emphasized the need for farmers to be consistent in cultivation to increase production output.

Climate change has also been identified as a major factor hindering production output, with many farmers delaying cultivation until the rainy season. However, this comes with risks, as heavy rainfall often leads to flooding incidences, which washes away farms.

The National Bureau of Statistics estimates rice consumption in Lagos at 7.4 million metric tonnes (MMT) for 2024/25, driven by consumers’ preference for rice as a more affordable staple food.
