Renowned British actor Dame Maggie Smith passed away peacefully in a London hospital on Friday, September 27, 2024, at the age of 89, her sons announced.
Smith’s illustrious career spanned over seven decades, earning her numerous accolades, including a Tony, two Oscars, three Golden Globes, and five Baftas.
Born on December 28, 1934, Smith began her stage career in 1952 with the Oxford University Dramatic Society. Her iconic roles include the Dowager Countess of Grantham Violet Crawley in the hit TV series “Downton Abbey” and her Oscar-winning performances in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” (1969) and “Othello” (1969).
Her sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, stated, “She was an intensely private person, surrounded by friends and family at the end.” They expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and kind messages.
Smith is survived by her two sons and five grandchildren, who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.
