The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has commenced a seven-day warning strike across the country, following the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government.
The strike was triggered by the government’s failure to address the association’s demands, including the nullification of the appointment of the new Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, and the sack of the chairman of the university’s council for failure to enforce the directive of the Ministry of Education nullifying the appointments.
Key Demands:
- Relieve the Chairman of the Governing Council: The Federal Government should remove the Chairman for insubordination and enforce the Ministry of Education’s directive nullifying recent appointments.
- Prototype for Vice Chancellor Advertisement: Develop an all-inclusive prototype, using Ahmadu Bello University Zaria’s advertisement as a model.
- Retirement Age Harmonization: Increase the retirement age of Medical Consultants to 70 years.
- Payment Harmonization: Align Medical Lecturers’ emoluments with the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).
- Payment of Allowance Arrears: Pay outstanding 2023 and 2024 Clinical Duty Allowance arrears and 2023 25% /35% CONMESS arrears.
The MDCAN National Executive Council will reconvene on November 24, 2024, to assess progress and determine the next course of action.
