NEMA Warns of Potential Floods in Benue, Kogi, Anambra, and Other States

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a flood alert to states in the central and southern regions of Nigeria, warning of potential floods that may affect downstream communities.

The agency advised states to prepare by clearing blocked drainage systems, constructing temporary flood barriers, and evacuating flood plains to safer higher ground.

The states most likely to experience flooding are Benue, Kogi, Anambra, Delta, Imo, Rivers, and Bayelsa. NEMA recommended that communities stay informed through weather updates and flood warnings, avoid crossing flooded areas, relocate from flood-prone zones, and cooperate with local emergency services.

The agency is working closely with state emergency management agencies and other stakeholders to ensure necessary support, including rescue and relief operations, is available to affected communities.

NEMA’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, emphasized the importance of early action and community vigilance, urging residents to take immediate preventive measures to safeguard lives and property.
