Action Aid Nigeria, a civil society organization, has called on Niger Delta state governments and other Southern states to take immediate action to mitigate the impact of the impending flood disaster.
The warning comes after the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr Joseph Utsev, alerted governors and local government chairmen in the Niger Delta region and other southern states to prepare for the coming flood disaster due to rising levels of Rivers Niger and Benue.
Andrew Mamedu, Country Director of ActionAid Nigeria, emphasized the need for proactive measures, including:
Evacuating residents in flood-prone areas to safe zones and providing emergency shelters
Conducting public awareness campaigns on flood safety measures
Ensuring drainage systems are clear and functional
Stockpiling emergency relief materials
Activating emergency response plans and teams

Mamedu also stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of flooding, such as environmental degradation, inadequate infrastructure, and climate change, through sustainable land use practices, restoring natural buffers, and promoting climate-resilient infrastructure development.
State and local governments are urged to partner with the Federal Government to address deforestation, land degradation, and poor urban planning.
The call to action aims to minimize the devastating effects of the predicted flood, protect lives and livelihoods, and build a more resilient and sustainable future for all Nigerians.
