Niger State Floods Claim 11 Lives, Displace Thousands

A devastating flood has ravaged Niger State, leaving 11 people dead and thousands displaced. The disaster has affected 529 communities across 19 local governments, with far-reaching consequences for food security and infrastructure.

The flood’s impact is widespread, with:

41,192 people and 6,865 households affected

34 communities displaced, now in IDP camps

246 school infrastructure destroyed

18 bridges and 80 culverts damaged

118,692 hectares of farmlands ravaged

Over 1,600 fish ponds washed away

The Niger State Government has responded by approving emergency food and item procurement. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) is seeking assistance from stakeholders, donors, and international partners.

“We’re still expecting more rains, and flooding may persist. Our focus is on mitigating further impact,” said NSEMA Director General, Abdullahi Baba Aarah.

This disaster echoes NiMET’s earlier warning that Niger State would be severely affected by flooding due to heavy rains. As the situation unfolds, concerns grow about potential food shortages and long-term consequences for affected communities.
