The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately release 32 malnourished children and other protesters detained for participating in the #EndBadGovernance protests.
The protests, sparked by Nigeria’s economic crisis, began in July 2024, with demonstrators demanding reduced governance costs, reinstatement of petrol subsidies, and food security.
Key Developments:
- Over 76 protesters, including 32 children, face treason and terrorism-related charges.
- Detained protesters, including minors, are reportedly malnourished and in poor health.
- Amnesty International and other organizations have condemned the government’s use of force against peaceful protesters.
Reactions:
- Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar condemned the killing of protesters and assaults on journalists.
- The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) urged opposition leaders to spearhead protests against President Tinubu’s government.
International Response:
- The United Nations has expressed concern over the detention of protesters and urged the Nigerian government to respect human rights.
- Human Rights Watch called on the government to investigate allegations of excessive force used against protesters.
As tensions rise, President Tinubu’s administration is under growing pressure to address the protesters’ demands and ensure the safety and well-being of detained protesters, particularly the children.
