Nigeria’s Energy Conundrum: 67.8% of Households Rely on Firewood

 

Abuja, Nigeria – The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed that a staggering 67.8% of Nigerian households depend on firewood as their primary energy source, according to the Nigeria Residential Energy Demand-Side Survey (NREDSS) 2024.

Key Findings:

  •  41% of households purchase fuelwood
  • 39% cut or collect fuelwood
  • 18.9% use alternative methods (barter, gift, borrowing)
  • 22% use charcoal
  • 19.4% use Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)
  •  58% of households connected to national grid

Expert Recommendations:

To mitigate environmental issues, the NBS suggests:

1. Promoting re-planting of trees
2. Encouraging clean energy sources (LPG, wind, solar)
3. Establishing more LPG stations
4. Local production of gas cylinders

Survey Details:

The NREDSS 2024 covered nine states across six geopolitical zones, interviewing 8,100 households.

The report highlights Nigeria’s energy challenges, emphasizing the need for sustainable solutions to reduce environmental impact and improve energy access.
