Nigeria’s House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to shut down all porn websites in the country. This move aims to protect societal values in the highly religious nation.
Lawmakers emphasized that cyber pornography is a growing global problem, with severe psychological and sociological consequences. They cited the promotion of adultery, prostitution, and addiction as immediate effects of consuming pornographic content.
The NCC is expected to enforce the shutdown, and internet providers must block access to these websites. Sanctions will be imposed on defaulting internet service providers.
This move follows a growing trend of countries regulating online content. The House has given its Committees on Communications and Legislative Compliance four weeks to ensure implementation and report back for further legislative action.
