Nigeria’s multidimensional poverty has reached alarming levels, with 160 million citizens struggling to survive. The harsh economic policies of the Bola Tinubu administration have eroded the middle class, leaving the vulnerable with no safety net.
Heart-wrenching scenes of children rummaging through dustbins for food scraps have become commonplace. Many gather at restaurant gates, awaiting leftover food to take home. A viral video showed hungry youths scooping rice mixed with dust and sand from a fallen truck, calling it a “gift from God.”
The #EndBadGovernance and #EndHunger protests in August descended into riots, with food stores and warehouses looted. Some protesters displayed Russian flags and were charged with treason.
The root cause of hunger, insecurity, persists. The Defence Headquarters reported a new terrorist group, Lakurawa, operating in Sokoto State. Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders, another armed group, allegedly invited them.
Government responses have been inadequate:
1. Subsidized rice promises unfulfilled (N40,000 vs. N120,000 market price)
2. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) public transport vehicles absent
3. Zero VAT and duties on food imports unimplemented
As officials enjoy luxuries, citizens suffer. Social media insults and protests signal growing discontent.
The Federal and State governments must address hunger and hardship or step aside for those who can.
