Third time this week
Nigeria’s fragile electricity grid suffered its third collapse in one week and eighth this year, plunging the country into darkness on Saturday.
According to data from the National System Operator, grid supply plummeted from 3,041.72MW at 8 a.m. to 47MW by 9 a.m., with only Azura-Edo IPP remaining online.
Vandalism Disrupts Power Transmission
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) attributed the collapse to vandalism, citing damaged transmission lines and towers on the 330kV Shiroro-Kaduna route.
Emergency Measures Implemented
To mitigate the impact, TCN engineers have temporarily rerouted power through the 330kV Kaduna-Jos transmission line, ensuring partial supply to Kaduna and Kano regions.
DisCos Severely Affected
Seven of eleven Distribution Companies (DisCos) reported zero load allocation, while Benin, Ibadan, Ikeja, and Eko DisCos received minimal supply.
Authorities Scramble for Solution
TCN vows to deploy emergency restoration systems and rebuild damaged infrastructure. The incident underscores Nigeria’s pressing need for robust electricity infrastructure.
Key Facts:
- Third grid collapse in one week
- Eighth collapse in 2024
- Vandalism caused transmission line damage
- Temporary measures implemented to restore partial power
- Seven DisCos severely impacted
Nigeria’s electricity woes continue, emphasizing the urgency for infrastructure upgrades and security measures.
