NIWA Boosts Waterway Safety with Comprehensive Reforms

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has launched a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing safety on Nigeria’s waterways. Managing Director Bola Oyebamiji unveiled the plans during a recent stakeholders’ meeting.

 

Key Reforms:

1. Phasing out wooden boats: NIWA will replace wooden boats, which account for 90% of waterway accidents.

2. Nigerian Waterways Code: A standardized code will regulate boat operators and passenger conduct.

3. NIWA River Marshalls: Trained marshals will ensure safety compliance at jetties and loading points.

4. Safety campaigns: Educational campaigns will promote safe practices among operators and passengers.

5. Workshops for boat operators: Regular workshops will enhance operators’ knowledge and skills.

 

Marine Services and Transport Integration

NIWA’s Marine Services division will enforce safety regulations, respond to emergencies, and ensure maritime security. The Transport Services division will integrate water transport into the national multimodal transportation framework, reducing road congestion and enhancing regional connectivity.

 

Stakeholder Collaboration

NIWA has established partnerships with key stakeholders, including:

1. Police

2. Navy

3. Customs

4. Riverine state governments

5. Maritime stakeholders
