The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned the recent petrol price hike, stating that it has eroded the gains of the newly implemented N70,000 minimum wage.
NLC President, Joe Ajaero, criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration for betraying organized labour by increasing petrol prices despite agreeing to a higher minimum wage.
Ajaero recalled negotiations with Tinubu, where the president allegedly offered a N250,000 minimum wage in exchange for accepting the petrol price hike. Labour rejected the offer, citing its potential harm to Nigerians.
“We were betrayed by Mr. President,” Ajaero said. “The N70,000 minimum wage is now useless due to the petrol price increase.”
The NLC plans to meet with the federal government to discuss ways workers can cope with the price hike.
