The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members are calling on the Federal Government to implement the promised N77,000 allowance to alleviate their economic hardship. Despite the government’s approval of the new minimum wage in July 2024, corps members are still receiving the allowance of N33,000, which is no longer sustainable due to high transportation, feeding, and other daily expenses.
The corps members took to social media to express their concerns, sharing their struggles to make ends meet. For instance, one member spends N5,000 on transportation and N2,000 on Community Development Service (CDS) contributions, leaving them with just N26,000 from the N33,000 allowance.
The Federal Government approved the new minimum wage after the expiration of the old wage structure in April, with the sum of N70,000 as the minimum wage. The NYSC Director General, Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for the increased allowance, noting it will provide financial relief and boost morale among corps members.
Key Highlights:
- New Allowance: N77,000 per month
- Previous Allowance: N33,000 per month
- Effective Date: July 2024

It’s essential for the government to expedite the implementation of the new allowance to improve the welfare of NYSC members.
