National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members are expressing frustration over the Federal Government’s failure to pay the approved N77,000 monthly allowance. Despite the government’s promise to implement the increased allowance from July 2024, corps members are still receiving the old allowance of N33,000.
Many corps members have shared their struggles with the insufficient allowance, citing difficulties in covering basic expenses like accommodation, food, and transportation. One corps member serving in Abia State lamented that the N33,000 allowance is “not enough” and that they have to rely on support from family members to survive.
The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, had announced that the new allowance would be paid starting February 2025. However, a senior NYSC official confirmed that the scheme has yet to commence payment of the N77,000 allowance.
This development has sparked widespread dissatisfaction among corps members, who are calling on the Federal Government to fulfill its promise and pay the approved allowance.
