Ogun Council Election Marred by Violence and Logistical Challenges

Armed thugs invaded polling units in Ijebu Igbo, disrupting the Ogun State local government elections and injuring several voters.

The elections, which aimed to elect chairmen and councillors into 20 Local Government Councils and 236 wards, were plagued by low voter turnout and logistical challenges. Voting was scheduled to take place from 8am to 3pm but didn’t start until 11am in most polling centers.

Key Election Challenges:

  • Low Voter Turnout: Many polling units were empty as of 11am, with voters staying away due to fear of violence and intimidation.
  • Logistical Issues: Election materials and officials were delayed, leaving local government headquarters as late as 11am.
  • Violence and Intimidation: Thugs harassed and injured voters, disrupting the electoral process

This incident is not isolated, as there have been reports of similar disruptions in other parts of Nigeria, including Lagos and Anambra states. The police have arrested some thugs and recovered guns in some cases.

However, in some instances, police officers were reportedly absent or fled during the attacks.
