The Ondo State Police Command has arrested three herders in connection with the murder of a 36-year-old farmer, Sunday Ayeni. The suspects, Abdullah Halilu Tumbi (59), Mohamodu Adamu Bonkolo (50), and Shagari Muhammed (45), were charged with conspiracy and murder.
According to the police, the suspects stabbed Ayeni while he was working on his farm at Afiri Camp via Oka-Akoko, Akoko South-West council area. The incident occurred on August 10, 2024.
The suspects had allegedly been allowed to graze their cattle on Ayeni’s farm after paying compensation for damages to his crops. However, a dispute arose, leading to the fatal stabbing.
The police prosecutor, Folashade Adeyemi, told the Akure Chief Magistrate court that the defendants conspired with others to kill Ayeni by stabbing him with a cutlass. The charge contravenes Sections 316, 319, and 324 of the Criminal Code Law of Ondo State, 2006.
The magistrate, A. Akinboboye, ordered the defendants to be remanded at the Olokuta Correctional Centre in Akure pending advice from the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions. The case was adjourned until December for mention.
