Pope Francis is showing signs of improvement after being hospitalized with bronchitis that developed into pneumonia in both lungs. According to the Vatican, the 88-year-old pope had a peaceful night, got up, and even had breakfast in his armchair. His blood tests also showed a slight improvement, and his clinical conditions are stable.
Despite his illness, Pope Francis is still working, reading and signing documents, writing, and keeping up with the news. He even received Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for a 20-minute visit and was described as “alert and responsive” with his sense of humor still intact.
However, Pope Francis has had a series of health issues in recent years, including colon and hernia surgery, problems walking, and pain in his hip and knee. The Vatican has been issuing regular updates to counter speculation about his health, and it’s unclear whether he’ll be able to give the traditional Angelus prayer at midday following mass.
