SERAP Sues President Tinubu Over Petrol Price Hike and Alleged Corruption in NNPCL

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against President Bola Tinubu, accusing him of failing to direct the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to reverse the “unlawful” increase in petrol price and probe alleged corruption and mismanagement in the company.

In the suit, SERAP argues that the petrol price hike has caused immense hardship for many Nigerians, particularly the most vulnerable sectors of society, and that the government has a legal obligation to probe and prosecute allegations of corruption and mismanagement in the oil sector.

SERAP is asking the court to compel President Tinubu to direct the NNPCL to reverse the price increase, probe the allegations of corruption and mismanagement, and prosecute anyone suspected to be responsible if there is sufficient evidence.

The suit also argues that the increase in petrol price constitutes a fundamental breach of constitutional guarantees and international human rights obligations, and that the government has a responsibility to ensure the maximum welfare, freedom, and happiness of every citizen based on social justice and equality of status and opportunity.
