A devastating accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday in the Maryland axis of Lagos, resulting in the loss of three lives and leaving several others injured. An oil tanker experienced brake failure and crashed into 10 vehicles, causing a multiple-vehicle accident.
According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the tanker was fully laden with diesel and lost control due to mechanical failure, resulting in numerous casualties. The agency’s response team arrived at the scene around 1:13 am and found two separate accidents, including a containerized truck that had collided with a MACK truck, leaving the driver with a leg injury.
The vehicles involved in the accidents included two Volkswagen Vanagon commercial buses, one Mitsubishi Space Bus, two mini-buses, and one Honda car. Emergency responders worked to secure the area, implement traffic control measures, and recover the vehicles involved in the accident.
The cause of the accident is attributed to reckless driving and speeding. The LASEMA spokesman, Nosa Okunbor, stated that the agency’s response teams worked tirelessly to recover all vehicles involved and alleviate the traffic gridlock caused by the incident.
