A devastating flood has ravaged Ugwu Mkpume Layout, Achalla Agu community in Nkpor Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, claiming the lives of a mother of three and another person.
The flood, caused by over 11 hours of heavy rainfall, swept away buildings, properties, and farmlands, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
Residents blame the construction firm working on a nearby road for exacerbating the flood by channeling water into their community instead of diverting it to the River Niger.
The Vice President of the Ugwu Mkpume Achalla Agu Landlords’ Association, Ifeanyi Oghota, described the incident as unfortunate and appealed to the state government to intervene.
The flood has left many families trapped, with some residents forced to flee to higher ground. Properties estimated to be worth millions of naira have been destroyed, and farmlands have been washed away. The community is calling on the state government to come to their aid and address the issue of poor flood control measures.
The State Emergency Management Agency has promised to send operatives to the area to assess the situation. The community is still reeling from the shock of the disaster, and the loss of life and property is a stark reminder of the need for effective flood control measures.
