A recent outbreak of violence in Enugu State’s University Town of Nsukka has resulted in the loss of two lives, courtesy of excessive activities by Oriokpa masqueraders. The Enugu State Government has swiftly launched a comprehensive investigation into the activities of these masquerade groups, vowing to hold perpetrators accountable.
The affected communities, which include Nguru, Isiakpu, Echara, Nru, Edem-Ezema, Iheagu, Ihe, Owere, and Umuoyo, have borne the brunt of the masqueraders’ actions, experiencing pandemonium, bodily harm, and fatalities.
In response to the incident, Governor Peter Mbah has directed the Commissioner of Police to conduct a thorough investigation into the incidents and bring those responsible to justice.
The government has also issued a stern warning, emphasizing its commitment to protecting citizens’ rights and security, and declaring that it will not tolerate further excesses from any group or individual.
Traditional rulers and Presidents-General of the affected communities have been summoned to address the issue, as part of the government’s efforts to prevent future occurrences and ensure public safety.
This incident is not isolated, as there have been previous reports of misconduct by the Oriokpa masquerades, including an attack on a female nurse in April. The government’s swift response aims to curb the violence and maintain order in the region.
According to Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Okey Ogbodo, the government frowns upon the excesses of the masqueraders and reaffirms its commitment to guaranteeing the rights and security of all citizens.
