Tragedy Strikes Ibadan: Landlord Loses Family Members in Building Collapse

 

 

A devastating building collapse in Ibadan’s Jegede Oluloyo area has left 13 people dead and 7 injured. The building, which housed mentally challenged individuals, was owned by Alhaji Dauda Lamidi, who tragically lost his wife, child, and three grandchildren in the incident.

Eyewitness Accounts

Lamidi recounted his ordeal, stating, “I built the house about 40 years ago, but I never expected it to collapse suddenly. I was just coming back from the toilet when the building came crashing down. I have lost so much.”

 

Funmilayo Oyedele, who lost her 7-year-old child, shared her heartbreaking experience, “I was preparing for my son’s school when I heard a deafening noise.”

 

Response and Relief Efforts

The Oyo State Police Command and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the casualty figures. NEMA rescued five people from the rubble, including one adult male, two adult females, and two children.

 

The Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, urged the Oyo State Government to investigate the building collapse and provide relief materials to the victims and their families. The Power Minister, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, emphasized the importance of ensuring infrastructure safety and conducting regular inspections to prevent similar tragedies.

 

The community is now calling for urgent action to address the structural weaknesses of other buildings in the area to prevent future disasters.
