Uber and Bolt Drivers in Nigeria Seek Federal Regulation

E-hailing drivers in Nigeria, under the Amalgamated Union of App-based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), are calling for a federal government framework to regulate the business across the country.

Key Reasons for Federal Regulation:

1. Unfavourable State Regulations: Drivers claim that state regulations are unfair and have never favoured them.
2. Multiple Taxations: A national framework would help reduce multiple taxations imposed on drivers.
3. Kidnapping and Security: A national regulatory framework could reduce the rate of kidnapping of drivers.

Benefits of Federal Regulation:

1. Standardized Regulations: A federal framework would provide standardized regulations across the country.
2. Improved Relationships: Better relationships between app companies, governments, and drivers would lead to seamless business operations.
3. Reduced Insecurity: A national framework could reduce the risk of kidnapping and other security concerns.

AUATON’s Efforts:

1. Registered Trade Union: AUATON is a registered trade union under the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
2. Conference and Advocacy: The union hosted a conference in 2024 to advocate for a national regulatory framework.
