University of Abuja Appoints Aisha Maikudi as New Vice-Chancellor Amidst Controversies

Professor Aisha Maikudi has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, despite controversies surrounding her selection. The appointment was announced by the university’s governing council, and Maikudi is set to take office on January 1, 2025, for a non-renewable tenure of five years.

Maikudi emerged as the best candidate among 10 shortlisted applicants, but some stakeholders have raised concerns that she lacks the required years of experience to hold the position. However, the university has defended Maikudi’s appointment, stating that she is fully qualified for the role.

The controversies surrounding Maikudi’s appointment are rooted in allegations that the governing council planned to impose her as the new Vice-Chancellor, despite her perceived lack of experience. However, the university has denied these allegations, stating that the selection process was transparent and merit-based.

Maikudi’s supporters argue that she is a highly qualified and accomplished academic, with a strong track record of leadership and administration. They also point out that the requirement for 10 years of experience as a professor is not a statutory requirement, and that many universities have appointed vice-chancellors with less experience.
