US Accuses North Korea of $1.5 Billion Crypto Heist from Bybit

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has accused North Korea of orchestrating the theft of $1.5 billion worth of digital assets from cryptocurrency exchange Bybit. This incident marks the largest crypto heist in history.

The FBI identified a group called TraderTraitor, also known as the Lazarus Group, as responsible for the theft. The stolen assets have been converted to bitcoin and other virtual assets, dispersed across thousands of addresses on multiple blockchains.

This incident highlights North Korea’s growing expertise in cybercrime, with hackers linked to the regime stealing over $1.3 billion in cryptocurrency in 2024. The proceeds from these cyber-attacks are believed to fund state-sponsored operations and circumvent international sanctions.
