Today, 85 Nigerian deportees are set to arrive in Lagos from the United States, while 116 others remain in detention. The deportees will be flown directly to Lagos, with the first group comprising convicted prisoners who have committed crimes in the US, violated immigration laws, and exhausted their legal appeals.
The Federal Government has expressed concerns over the deportation process, calling for a more humane approach. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has emphasized the need for adherence to internationally prescribed guidelines and a dignified return for the deportees.
The US government’s deportation process is part of a broader immigration crackdown by the Donald Trump Administration. The policy shifts have heightened concerns among immigrant communities.
