A deliberate act of vandalism on the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s (TCN) 330kV transmission line has plunged Damaturu, Yobe State, and Maiduguri, Borno State, into darkness.
The incident occurred on September 21, 2024, at 1:44 a.m. when suspected vandals hacked down tower T372 along the Gombe-Damaturu-Maiduguri transmission line.
TCN General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah stated that the attack caused the collapse of tower T372, with all four tower footings cut off. As a result, Damaturu is being back-fed through a 33kV transmission line from Potiskum, while Maiduguri is being powered by the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP).
Reconstruction efforts are underway, with TCN engineers working to dismantle and evacuate the collapsed tower and restore the transmission line.
TCN condemned the incessant attacks on national assets, urging citizens to be vigilant in protecting transmission infrastructure and report suspicious activities to law enforcement or TCN offices.
The company is committed to swiftly restoring power to the affected areas.
