A deadly clash between artisanal miners and suspected hoodlums in Minna, Niger State, has left multiple casualties and widespread destruction. The conflict began on Thursday, November 14, 2024, over disputed mining locations in the city, particularly in the Metunbi and Tunga Bye Pass areas.
The Conflict Escalates
During the initial clash, hoodlums cut off the hand of a miner, sparking a revenge attack by the miners the following day. The situation spiralled out of control, with both parties brandishing dangerous weapons and threatening innocent residents.
Innocent Bystander Killed
Tragically, a security operative shot and killed an onlooking Keke NAPEP rider, who was not involved in the conflict. The incident sparked outrage among Keke NAPEP operators, who demanded justice for their slain colleague.
Eyewitness Accounts
Eyewitnesses described the chaos and fear that gripped the city. Aisha Dauda, a provision shop owner, recounted how she quickly closed her shop to avoid being caught in the crossfire.
Yakubu Abubakar, a resident of Tunga Bye Pass, witnessed the hoodlums cutting off the miner’s hand and the subsequent violence.
Investigations Underway
The Niger State Commissioner of Police, Shawulu Danmamman, confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the security operative responsible for the bystander’s death. The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps has also denied involvement in the shooting.
The incident highlights the need for increased security measures and conflict resolution strategies to prevent such violent clashes in the future.
