WHO Declares No Emergency Over Respiratory Viruses in China

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that no emergency has been declared over respiratory viruses in China. According to Dr. Margaret Harris, spokesperson for the WHO, the rise in respiratory infections is expected during winter and is within the normal range.¹

Regarding the human metapneumovirus (hMPV), Dr. Harris clarified that it’s not a new virus, but rather one that has been present in the human population since 2001, typically causing symptoms similar to the common cold. The mortality rate of hMPV is described as “very, very low,” and it’s not a pathogen that normally leads to deaths in humans, except for the most vulnerable individuals.

To reduce the risk of infections, the public is advised to take preventive measures such as:

  • Hand Hygiene: Regular handwashing
  •  Wearing a Mask: Using masks in crowded areas
  •  Improving Ventilation: Ensuring good airflow in enclosed spaces
  •  Avoiding Crowded Places: Staying away from densely populated areas

These precautions can effectively reduce the risk of respiratory infections, including hMPV.
