A 26-year-old woman, Rachael, has been arrested for selling her two-week-old baby for N600,000 in Asaba, Delta State. The baby was sold to a 42-year-old woman for N4 million. Rachael claimed she sold the baby due to her inability to cater for her, as the father of the baby denied paternity.
Rachael was paraded at the state Police Command alongside two other accomplices by the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Bright Edafe. According to Rachael, she is a mother of one other male child and was finding it difficult to take care of the two children alone.
Rachael explained that she was introduced to a woman who helped her sell the baby. The woman, whose identity was not disclosed, said she sold the child for N3.5 million and gave Rachael N600,000. The woman claimed that Rachael told her she wanted to use the money to start a business.
However, the 42-year-old woman who bought the baby said she paid N4 million for the child and was assured that the adoption documents were being processed.
The incident has raised concerns about child trafficking and the exploitation of vulnerable women in the state. The police are investigating the matter to ensure that all those involved are brought to justice.
